OPTION 1 (LI)
If you are an American citizen, have been overseas for more than one year,
and are definitely returning to your field of service, then you can apply
for an international insurance plan that will cover you while in the USA.
This plan, however, will cover you for no more than one year.
When applying, you will need to list your “Country of Permanent Fixed
Residence - - Home Country” (not the USA but the country where you have
been living and working). The insurance company is treating you as a visitor
to the USA, which you are, since your permanent residence is outside the USA.
With this plan you will be paying premium based on the “Traveling to
the USA” rates.
You can find out more about this plan, or purchase it online
OPTION 2 (HPA)
You can purchase a domestic short-term health insurance plan that is offered in the state that you will consider your main residence while back in the USA. This should be the state where you have your driver’s license and/or where you will be spending the majority of your furlough time. These plans offer various deductibles and periods of insurance from one to twelve months. You can pay the premium by the month or up front. If you pay it up front you will save some money. These plans allow you to go to any doctor, but do not include co-pays or prescription cards and do not cover per-existing conditions. Such plans are normally used to insure people between jobs, between college and a job, etc.
You can find out more and apply for these plans online.
