GROUP INSURANCE PROVIDED BY BUPA

BUPA is a huge international health insurance company with roots in England. It has been around for many years, and recently purchased IHI Denmark in order to have a larger presence in Latin America.

BUPA is a surplus lines carrier, and its group insurance is not a true American-type group insurance. It will provide discounts for groups over ten, provide individual deductibles for employees, and will underwrite for pre-existing conditions. It handles pre-existing conditions by either rating up the premium, putting a rider on the condition, or raising the deductible for a specific condition.

All new employees are underwritten and can be declined coverage. So this is not “true” group insurance. The advantage is that it is so set up that one administrator can handle insurance for the group. For groups of over 50 employees, there is no underwriting.
