Voyager Choice international medical insurance is absolutely a plan that we cherish. The reason that this plan is so valuable is because of the rich benefits it offers for our clients. Many travelers on vacation have secured this international health and travel insurance, and short term volunteers have used this for as missionary insurance. However, this is particularly useful for people with pre-existing conditions. The company that provides these benefits is one of the most excellent in the world. Our department here at Good Neighbor has actually had training where the company informed us about their emergency response team and how they handle a medical evacuation. Since that time, our confidence has been fortified that these plans are something we will recommend for our clients’ protection.
This plan comes in two levels of coverage: the Essential which is the most basic, and the Choice which is the stronger option. Both of these plans have great coverage. Neither plan excludes coverage for epidemics, or war and terrorism (as long as you are not an active participant). The Choice has a major component that the Essential doesn’t. The Choice has the benefit of covering all pre-existing conditions. The Choice also has a requirement that the Essential does not, which is that you must have an active primary U.S. health plan while you are covered on the Voyager Choice. To be eligible for the Choice, you must have any primary U.S. medical insurance plan, which includes Group plans, Individual plans, and Medicare; excludes VA benefits and Medicaid.
Pre-existing Conditions: Pre-existing conditions are medical conditions that have happened in the past and prior to the effective date of coverage. This could be a sprained ankle two years ago, to a chronic heart condition. Most international health and travel insurance plans will exclude pre-existing conditions in the majority of cases. Let’s use the example of asthma. A traveler goes overseas in the Fall season. They catch a cold which causes them to have a severe asthma attack, resulting in a hospitalization; it may or may not be covered. It will depend on what the doctor says on the record. It depends if the claims were the result of the pre-existing condition or not. On the Voyager Choice, they wouldn’t have to worry if it is pre-existing condition or not. Another example is one who has high blood pressure. Even if controlled by medication, it is considered a pre-exiting condition and a heart attack would not be covered except on Choice.
Here is the thing with coverage for pre-existing conditions. This Voyager Choice plan is never for maintenance of any pre-existing conditions. So for example, if one is traveling to another country, and knows they will need to have an operation they cannot expect this policy to cover the surgery. Maintenance medications are also not covered; one should have their prescriptions filled before traveling. The whole point of this short term international medical insurance is for emergency treatments, should they occur. If you want the coverage in case a medical circumstance could be the result of or by a pre-existing condition, I recommend the Voyager Choice. This is usually our first recommendation for travelers over age 60. I spoke with a person recently who had heart surgery many years ago. They decided to go with the Choice plan because of the potential of a claim happening as a result of or in connection to their past heart surgery. It is even a great idea for international missionary insurance.
General Benefits: Aside from the pre-existing conditions, the plan has other wonderful benefits included in the two levels of coverage. Let me get the information for you! On the Essential the italicized items are the differences.
Choice: * Medical Evacuation insurance is covered up to $500,000 * Return or Repatriation of Remains is included up to $25,000 * Accidental Death and Dismemberment is included up to $50,000 * Outpatient prescription drugs are covered to $5,000 * Dental injury and pain relief are both covered up to $500 * Exclusive pre-existing conditions coverage is included
Essential: * Medical evacuation is also included up to $500,000 * Return or Repatriation of Remains is included up to $25,000 * Accidental Death and Dismemberment is included up to $25,000 * Outpatient prescription drugs are covered at 50 percent to $5,000 * Dental injury is covered up to $200 and pain relief is up to $100 * No pre-existing conditions are covered.
As you can see, the only differences in the Essential and Choice, is the Essential has less coverage on a few benefits and no coverage for pre-existing conditions. The other difference will be the premium. The Essential has lower rates then the Choice plan.
Regarding pregnancy, we have many inquiries from people asking for coverage for a pregnancy. No short term plan will provide maternity benefits for someone who is already pregnant. Yet, we have good news! The Choice will provide coverage for complications of pregnancy, which covers expenses in the event that the mother’s and/or the baby’s lives are in danger. It doesn’t matter how long someone has been pregnant in order to have this benefit. This is strictly for an unexpected emergency that could happen while pregnant. The Essential does not have this coverage for someone who is already pregnant before the policy starts.
Medical evacuation is handled on a case by case basis. A medical evacuation is provided at the coordination and payment of the insurance company when one has an injury or sickness that requires immediate emergency medical treatment. This must be a situation where there is a significant risk of death or serious impairment and treatment is not available locally. The medical evacuation will take the patient to the nearest adequate medical facility to provide the necessary treatment.
The Voyager Choice and Essential are superb options for international health and travel insurance. Whether you are looking for international missionary insurance, or just looking for simple coverage on vacation, we have this and more!
