When looking for where to study abroad, it can be very overwhelming deciding on where the best place is for you. There are hundreds of cities in dozens of countries to choose from. Top Universities has created a list of the top 100 best cities for students. Their rankings are based on affordability, desirability, employer activity, and more. Here are the results.
Their top 10 best cities for students starting with the best are Montreal, Paris, London, Seoul, Melbourne, Berlin, Tokyo, Boston, Munich, and Vancouver. It may be surprising that only one American city is in the top 15, but that seems to be due to how expensive it is to live there. Germany has three cities in the top 15. This may be due to college tuition currently being free. However, Germany may be forced to reintroduce tuition fees in the next few years because of how much it is costing the government.
When considering in which city to study abroad, it is important to first decide what is important to you. Are you primarily looking to eventually work in that city? Are you looking to study abroad affordably? Are you looking to explore a particular area or learn about a certain culture? Will language be an obstacle where you will be? These are all important factors to consider when choosing a location.
We encourage you to take some time to research which of the best cities for students may be right for you. You can research about the city using books from a library and the internet. You can read blogs, you can try to find other students’ experiences in that city, and you can try to talk to a staff member at your university.
One great resource is The Abroad Guide. It contains information about destinations, about preparing for studying abroad, and tips for when you are there. There are many other great resources as well, such as Studyabroad.com.
In whichever city you choose to study, you need a good study abroad insurance plan to protect you from a catastrophic loss or long-term debt. For most students we recommend the Patriot Exchange study abroad insurance plan, which can be found here: https://www.goodinternationalstudentinsurance.com/patriot-exchange-study-abroad-insurance/.
It is important to make the most of your experience, and to spend some time exploring the area in which you are studying. If studying in Europe, you may even want to visit several countries. Travel between many of the countries is relatively simple and inexpensive.
If you decide to travel during your study abroad experience, we think that is a great decision. But that increases the importance of having a good study abroad insurance plan. The more you travel, the greater the risk of something unfortunate happening. Our desire is that you have amazing and safe travels.
Please don’t get caught studying abroad or traveling overseas with insufficient insurance. We offer plans that will help you get high-quality medical care in the best facilities.
