Connemara’s most unforgettable views and wonders

August 15, 2016 By : Allison

If you’re planning a visit to Ireland, Connemara is a must. There are many sites in Connemara. Connemara means “Inlets of the Sea” in Irish. It is nestled in County Galway, on the western coast of Ireland. It is made up of several peninsulas that just into the ocean, with mountain vistas on the west and the north side of Connemara. Oscar Wilde, an Irish writer, stated “Connemara is a savage beauty.” Below are some of Connemara’s most unforgettable views and wonders:

• Cnoc Suain
Cnoc Suain is a village in Connemara, where traditional Irish culture is preserved. Cnoc Suain offers beautiful mountain, sea, river, and lake views, as well as traditional Irish houses, which were hidden for many years. In 1995, Charlie Troy and his wife found this hillside farm. They found Irish stone cottages which are now open for the public and are available to stay in during your visit. Cnoc Suain has won numerous awards for their cultural retreat.

• Connemara Heritage & History Centre
It is a hill farm six kilometers from Clifden. This idyllic farm is relaxing and tranquil, with breathtaking fresh air. It was owned by the Dan O’Hara family, who had to emigrate to New York in the 1840’s. There are guided tours with demonstrations of traditional farm activities. The center also has an audio visual presentation that tells the history of Dan O’Hara and the land.

• Sky Road
Sky Road is a popular site in Connemara. It is an 11 km circular route. Sky Road takes you to hills overlooking the entire splendid Connemara region. Along the way is Monument Hill, which is a great climbing spot. It is a perfect point to take photographs and view the town below.

• Aughnanure Castle
The Aughnanure Castle is two miles from Galway and was built in the 16th century. The castle itself consists of guard gate, a lower floor, two upper floors, and a sleeping room. There are also two courtyards outside the castle.

• Connemara National Park
The park is over 2,957 hectares of mountain ranges, including Twelve Ben, MaumTurks, Partry, and Shefftey. The most incredible site in this park is Diamond Hill, which offers stunning sites. From the top, visitors will see the ocean, islands, mountains, and Kylemore Abbey. Besides that, this park has a playground, picnic area, and an audiovisual performance of Connemara.

After reading these highlights of Connemara’s most unforgettable views and wonders, we hope you get the opportunity to see them for yourself.
