This is a great video talking about adventure sports insurance or extreme sports insurance (which are a couple of names those insurance plans go by). Featuring Mark Sequeira and Doug Gulleson the Vice President of Good Neighbor Insurance.
Some important excerpts of the video, in case this is helpful for you.
What does a person, choosing insurance for an adventure sport, need to know? As an enthusiast, loving a particular extreme sport – What should they look for regarding adventure sports insurance?
The first thing to keep in mind when you look at an international travel insurance plan, is if it covers your sport or not. As you know “the big print giveth, and the little print taketh away!” We have a few plans that provide amazing sports coverage, however not all sports are covered on every one of these plans. If there are listed sports that are covered, and you don’t see your sport on that list, it may not be covered (this is especially true lately with regards to base jumping and motocross coverage). You can check the information online, as well as contact us for any questions.
If there is a sports rider, you will want to check the box or area where you see your specific sport listed. If you don’t select the coverage, those sports won’t be covered. Even if you will only do a sport once during your trip, we recommend obtaining the adventure sports coverage to cover you in case something happens while you participate in that sport.
Even though the cost is not that great, what amount of coverage can you select for the participation in extreme sports?
We have international extreme sports insurance plans that provide coverage from $50,000 all the way up to $1,000,000. Depending on the type of your sport, there will probably be a “best option” for you. For example, on the Diplomat International / America, intramural, intercollegiate, interscholastic and organized or club sport are limited to $20,000, whereas for most other non-professional extreme sports you can choose your medical maximum limit. Though for those intramural and club sports on the Trawick Safe Travels International / America, you have coverage up to whatever medical maximum limit you choose! On the Trawick plans for the other non-professional extreme sports, the premium is generally higher than the Diplomat. Just to complete the spectrum, for most professional sports and all other covered sports, the Bupa international provides unlimited coverage. So you can see we have a “best option” to cover almost every sport!
Medical evacuation is always going to be at least $250,000 or more regardless of the medical maximum limit that you choose.
Sometimes when people travel, they rent motorcycles or scooters to travel around. Do they need international extreme sports insurance?
Actually yes. Because for international insurance companies, there is a big risk in some areas when people are traveling by motorcycle or scooter. We have a specific plan for this, the Diplomat International.
* One note in regards to the video above, we no longer provide insurance for motocross, as it was removed from the policy we have.
If I am traveling, am I also covered for other new injuries or illnesses if they happen outside of a sport?
Yes, all of these international adventure sports insurance plans provide regular travel health coverage as well, so you can travel worry-free.
