Five Benefits to Studying Abroad

December 28, 2017 By : Allison

You probably know this already, but there are many benefits to studying abroad.  Most people agree on the major benefits, but everyone has a different opinion on which ones are the greatest or most important. Here is our list of the five top benefits to studying abroad in order of priority.

  1. Personal Growth and Development

In our opinion, your personal growth and development is the greatest benefit you will receive from studying abroad. You will learn more about your strengths, weakness, personality, gifts, and more. You will be forced try new things, which will help you learn what you are good at and what you might not enjoy as much. As you deal with difficulties, such as homesickness, you may discover things you didn’t know about yourself. Since you are truly off on your own when you study abroad, it will be a good opportunity to become more disciplined, learn humility when making mistakes or asking for help, or become more independent. This is most important because it affects every area of your life, not just education or employment.

  1. Increase Employability

Nearly every employer believes that studying abroad is a positive experience. Having experience in a different culture with people from different backgrounds is very helpful. As the world becomes more global and connected, having these skills will only become increasingly necessary.

  1. Creating Lifelong Friends and Memories

Since the world today is closely connected with the internet, social media, and messaging apps, it is easy to stay in touch with people on the other side of the ocean. There is a good possibility that you will meet one or more people that you really connect with and will stay in touch with. You will probably also experience things for the first time in your life, and maybe the only time in your life. As you do new things you will be creating memories that will last your entire life. No one can take that away from you.

  1. Learn About A New Language and Culture

It may seem like we are a broken record, but the world is becoming smaller and more connected every day. It some places it is becoming necessary to speak two languages, and it certainly looks good to future employers. Learning a new culture broadens your perspective on life and allows you to see that your culture is not either all bad or perfect. You will discover new ways of seeing things and doing things that will enrich your life.

  1. Gain A New Perspective

Last, but not least, studying abroad will help you gain a new perspective on life. You will learn many different things that will shape how you view life and the world around you in a new light. Even if you only learn a few things, there may be one thing that changes the direction of your life. For instance, many people that study abroad either decide to attend graduate school, change their major, or move to their host country in order to search for employment. Those are all life-changing decisions.

There are many more benefits to studying abroad that we could have named, and we may write another blog post about those. We hope you make the decision to study abroad because we sincerely believe it will change your life for the better.

If you do make that decision, we highly encourage you to make sure you have a good study abroad insurance plan. It is important that you are protected while you are out experiencing new things in new places.

One of our most flexible study abroad insurance plans is the HCC Student Secure found here: https://www.goodinternationalstudentinsurance.com/hcc-student-secure-study-abroad-insurance/

This health insurance plan gives you three levels of coverage as well as covers sports and maternity. But, if that plan doesn’t look right for you, we also have other plan options here.

We hope that you are able to experience many of the benefits to studying abroad, and that it is a safe, life-changing experience for you.
