Trip cancellation insurance is a type of travel insurance that can protect you from financial losses if you need to cancel your trip due to unforeseen circumstances. For example, if you or a family member becomes seriously ill and you are unable to travel, trip cancellation insurance can provide you with reimbursement for any non-refundable expenses you have paid for the trip, such as airfare or hotel reservations (depending on what level of trip cancellation benefits you invested in).
Trip cancelation insurance may also cover other unexpected events, such as natural disasters, strikes, or acts of terrorism, that may prevent you from traveling. It’s important to note, however, that not all reasons for canceling your trip are covered by trip cancellation insurance, so it’s important to carefully review the policy and you may chat with one of our experienced global trip cancellation insurance advisors to find the best options for your peace of mind.
Our varied trip cancellation insurance options are good for:
- Standard trip cancellation insurance provides evacuation and trip cancellation with limited medical coverage.
- Premium trip cancellation insurance provides evacuation with “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) and up to 100% trip cancellation. Our premium trip cancellation plans also provide strong medical coverage in case your U.S. domestic plan doesn’t cover you overseas/out-of-network.
- These trip cancelation insurance plans benefit you in case you have to cancel prior to your trip prior to your departure date. The reason for cancellation must be listed in your travel insurance policy. (Some policies have optional cancellation for any reason.)
- Trip interruption insurance plans typically reimburse you for pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses if an unexpected crisis occurs during your trip causing it to be cancelled, interrupted or delayed. Examples of crisis include death of a family member, sickness, airline strike, travel supplier bankruptcy and others.

Answer – Isabella, trip cancelation plans with this trip cancellation benefit must be purchased usually within 10-14 days of your initial trip deposit.
Also, do keep these two things in mind, Isabella.
- Trip cancelation plans will exclude coverage for a pre-existing condition, but will “waive” this exclusion if you purchase your coverage within the allotted time frame.
- For pre-existing conditions, you must be medically able to travel at the time you purchase your trip cancelation plan.
