The articles in this helpful guide INCLUDE:

– Looking Beyond Premium
– Explaining, Encouraging, Enforcing Full Participation
– “Why are we getting this increase?”
– Advanced Tips and Techniques to Lowering your Insurance Renewal
– What about Older Groups? Aging Groups?
– Social Good organizations and Start-ups
– The High Cost of Pharmaceuticals and What You Can Do
– Renewal is the Time To Negotiate (if handled properly)
– An offer for our free accompanying workbook!
– Does It Matter? (Including specific examples and results of using this information)

This guide will help you negotiate, as well as understand what is negotiable. It will help you know when a rate increase is justified or unjustifiable. And know when an increase is solely based on trend or items you can control. Whatever the case, we help you control costs, understand how to create a truly sustainable plan (without switching!), and how to look beyond price when comparing quotes/options.

Don’t forget to download the companion workbook that you can use to track the items we discuss here, as well as your goals, calendar reminders, and more – To help you stay organized and have one place/one source to rely on when it comes time to discuss renewal.

pages from Advanced Tips and Techniques to Save on Your Group Health Insurance Renewals

Examples from the international group health insurance special report:

“Never choose an ‘off-the-rack’ plan. It rarely fits your people well and leaves money on the table.”

“Are your people all in one location? Then you will want to consider local networks, the quantity and quality of local providers and direct billing agreements in that area/country since that will result in real savings in claims, which will result in a lower renewal.”

“If you know that your members take more than a few medicines and you’re choosing or renewing a health insurance plan, look closely at your plan’s drug benefits. An Rx strategy should be a part of your overall plan design. Doing so will help with sustainability.” (We discuss strategies about mitigating the high cost of Rx in-depth in the guide.)

Here’s another simple way to quickly assess whether your premiums will be going up:

“Consider your claims history:
– Where are your members getting the majority of their care? In the U.S.? Outside the U.S.?
(U.S. based claims are one of the single largest reasons for renewal increases.)
– Are U.S. claims based on true need, or due to a “perception of better care?” (You should be trying to drive as much treatment overseas as reasonable while maintaining comparable high quality, Western-style medical treatment.)
– Cost to members in the U.S.? – Consider/compare different co-insurance and deductible options for U.S. based care.
– You may want higher deductibles and co-insurance in the U.S. to incentivize care outside the USA.
(Some groups purposely choose high deductibles in the U.S. to keep annual premium down and then offer reserves to offset U.S. costs to their members.)”

Note: This special report on maintaining an efficient group health plan was sponsored by four of our insurance carriers. However the content was written independently and was not subject to their oversight or approval. The guide is for employers and groups. If you are an individual looking to save money on your annual premiums, we can help. However, this report has information that is only applicable to groups with two to 2,000 employees overseas and will not work for individual policy holders.
