Question: Here is a scenario I need you to answer for us, please. If I purchase this policy and while on my trip, say day 68 or 69 I am hospitalized. I see that there is only 70 days per trip. If I miss my flight on day 70 and am not released from the hospital till day 73 and return to the U.S. on day 74 of my trip am I still covered up to day 73 on this policy?
From GNI: This is a great question! We have heard this similar question before from our guests, like yourself, in the past. Here are the answers to your question.
Answer 1: The answer is that if you are traveling abroad and are confined in a hospital on the 70th day of your trip, the plan DOES NOT automatically extend for as many days as needed. Said another way, on this multi trip plan, there is no extension beyond the 70 days.
Answer 2: However, if you are confined to the hospital, or any other “unforeseen circumstance” happens, which delays your trip home on your termination date, the plan will extend for 7 days. The key here is to connect with the insurance company to inform them of your current situation. Here is the statement from the policy certificate. We highlighted in yellow the key answer to your question.
Trip Coverage End Date: The Insured Person’s coverage under the Plan for a trip during the Period of Insurance ends as stated below:
- For a scheduled trip to a Foreign Country, when the Insured Person alights from a conveyance at the completion of the trip.
- On the Period of Insurance Termination Date. However, if the Insured Person has not canceled his/her coverage, then coverage for a trip will extend past the Period of Insurance Termination Date if the Insured Person’s return is delayed by unforeseeable circumstances beyond his/her control. In this event, coverage will terminate as stated immediately above or, if earlier, 11:59 p.m. on the seventh day following the Period of Insurance Termination Date.
- If the Insured Person is covered under the Medical Evacuation Benefit, upon the Insured Person’s evacuation to the U.S.
