Ask Doug – Will the emergency medical evacuation take me or my wife back to the U.S?

Doug, will the emergency medical evacuation take me or my wife back to the U.S?
John, an emergency medical evacuation will always be to the nearest adequate medical facility. But once released from the hospital, your travel medical insurance company will take the insured back to either the place of the original evacuation, or back to the home country (some limitations apply depending on the travel medical insurance plan).
A couple added thoughts, John. When in doubt of your travel medical insurance coverage, please call the 24-hour phone number on your travel insurance card. Please also call or email us if there are any policy or claims questions. We at Good Neighbor Insurance brokerage, are always happy to answer them!

Doug, will a travel advisory affect my travel medical insurance coverage?
Great question, Phillipe. If a travel warning is in effect (Level 3 or 4 on a government warning list), coverage for war / terrorism injuries or political evacuation will not be covered. We have other travel insurance options that have high risk coverage if you are going to be traveling in those areas, Phillipe.

What does “Sudden and Unexpected Recurrence of a Pre-existing Condition” mean, Doug?
Jessica, this means a condition that has been stable (no treatments or change in medication) for six months or more that has an unexpected recurrence of symptoms. Treatment for this recurrence will have limited coverage on most travel insurance plans.

Will our travel medical insurance plan cover any of our maintenance medications, Doug?
Kayla, this is a great question. The answer to this question is “no.” Travel medical insurance plans will primarily cover for new medical injuries or illnesses. Any medication for an eligible event will be covered. For example, like antibiotics for an infection.

Question:
Hi Tracy, my husband and I are U.S. citizens residing in Texas. Next year, we plan to spend two months traveling to visit our three grown children and their families, who reside in Indonesia, Germany, and Portugal. Your email answered all our questions, but we have a general question regarding home country coverage. Could you help us learn more about this?
Answer:
That’s a great question, Beth. All travel plans are designed to provide short-term coverage while a person is traveling outside their home country. However, the policy wording and eligibility criteria can vary for each travel insurance plan.
With short-term travel plans, wording may be different from plan to plan.
- “Citizen” is straight forward on all travel plans. Also on all travel insurance plans, if a person has dual citizenship and one of the countries is the United States, the person will only be considered as a United States citizen.
- A person’s country of citizenship and country of residence are not always the same.
Most short-term travel plans will cover a person traveling outside of the country in which they reside. Policies may refer to this as:
- Home Country
- Country of Residence
- Permanent Home
“Home Country” is where a person has a principal residence where they receive mail, pay taxes, and to where the person has the intention to return.
On some travel insurance policies, if a person is a U.S. citizen, then the U.S. will always be considered their “Home Country,” even though the permanent residence may be outside of the U.S.
I am so glad you asked this question, Beth.
