Most medical evacuation plans have limits up to USD250,000. Most will be at USD500,000. One of our favorite long term career insurance plans for expats is the GMMI plan which you may view here at https://www.gninsurance.com/health/missionary/img-gmmi/.

Below is more information on the wordings of the medical evacuation benefits on the GMMI plan options.

The exact wording from the plan is below but the “nuts and bolts” of it would be:

The Emergency Medical Evacuation coverage will cover:

  • Emergency air transportation to a suitable airport nearest to the Hospital where the Insured Person will receive Treatment
  • Emergency ground transportation necessarily preceding Emergency air transportation and from the destination airport to the Hospital where the Insured Person will receive Treatment

EMERGENCY MEDICAL EVACUATION BENEFIT – Subject to the applicable Maximum Limit set forth in the SCHEDULE OF BENEFITS/LIMITS section, and the other Terms of this insurance, including the EXCLUSIONS section, and the Conditions and Restrictions set forth below, the Company will reimburse the Insured Person for the following transportation costs, when the Company or Plan Administrator arranges such transportation, and expenses incurred by the Insured Person arising out of or in connection with an Emergency Medical Evacuation occurring while this Certificate is in effect and during the Period of Coverage:

(2) Emergency ground transportation necessarily preceding Emergency air transportation and from the destination airport to the Hospital where the Insured Person will receive Treatment; and

Conditions and Restrictions – To be eligible for coverage for Emergency Medical Evacuation benefits the Insured Person must be in compliance with all Terms of this insurance. The Company will provide Emergency Medical Evacuation benefits only when the condition, Illness, Injury or occurrence giving rise to the Emergency Medical Evacuation is covered under the Terms of this insurance. The Company will provide Emergency Medical Evacuation benefits only when all of the following conditions and restrictions are met:

(a) Medically Necessary Treatment cannot be provided locally; and

(b) transportation by any other means or methods would result in loss of the Insured Person’s life or limb within 24 hours, based upon a reasonable medical certainty; and
