Please consider the following:

Do you need for home country coverage? Are you primarily seeking international health insurance for your country of citizenship/residence? Consider if you want your insurance coverage to follow you back home or if you will rely on local or nationalized care.

An international health insurance policy: International health insurance policies generally cover you worldwide, wherever you are, including the USA or Canada. This is true unless you choose the option to exclude them which will lower the rate for insurance if you do not intend to go there.
Note that on our IMG products, when you select “excluding the U.S.” they also exclude some countries and cities in Southeast Asia as well.

Consider your budget:

Maybe your employer will help pay for your international health plan as a part of your employee benefit package. Maybe your personal health insurance is covered, but you are seeking international health insurance for your family members. Either way we can help.

Your age and relative health

Do you need pre-existing medical coverage? Is there anything you are currently being seen by a doctor for? Are you on medication for any health condition?  Some international health carriers offering insurance for emerging markets feature more flexible underwriting. Other carriers can exclude a particular condition (“waiver”) or charge you more if you have prior health issues (called a “rate-up”).

Consider what you are buying:

Consider that these are “western-style” plans by known and recognized carriers worldwide. You should also consider the quality of the carrier and their customer service record, even their local network of service providers where you live and direct-pay agreements locally. The cheapest rate may not be the best option depending on the quality of local care.

What benefits do you require?

Is high-risk, crisis management or terrorism benefits important? How about exposure to pandemics or accidental death benefits/international term-life insurance benefits? Do you want maternity benefits as part of your plan, including for possible adoption? Even if you may travel to the USA to speak or raise awareness, you can purchase a short-term travel insurance policy for just those days in the USA. You can otherwise exclude the U.S. on your international health insurance policy.

Is it renewable?

If you decide to add multiple years or additional months, can you easily renew while living overseas or do you need to reapply/go through underwriting again?
