Van Life Nomadic Travels
Van Life is an alternative lifestyle adopted by many nomads looking to live a minimalistic, less traditional lifestyle.
Most van-life nomads adapt or purchase vehicles that are outfitted with a bed, and a small kitchenette. Only the most expensive vans include bathroom or shower facilities built in!
Van life varies from country to country and also varies on one’s budget. Most van-lifers spend only a few dollars a day for food and fuel.
Most van-life nomads enjoy traveling from place to place, shopping locally at farmers markets and artisanal shops, and living frugally.
But all van life nomads enjoy
- Not staying in one place for a long period of time. Most stops are 5 days or less!
- Traveling off the beaten path
- Spending more time out in nature whether it’s hiking in the mountains, rock climbing, or even surfing at the beach
- And living in a simpler lifestyle.
Some of the benefits of van life include lower costs of living, freedom to roam from place to place, and the ability to build a strong network of friends from all different places. One of the challenges with van life can be finding a place to shower if one’s van does not include those amenities, and not having much space to store or keep possessions.

7 Best Ways to Become a Sustainable Traveler
Today, the modern traveler wants more than just having an enjoyable time away from home. Many travelers also dream of making the world a better place by being a positive influence to those they touch and to our global environment.
Sometimes, we think we may not be able to transform an entire society. However, that does not mean we can’t make a difference. Even positively impacting one person’s life is making the world a better place.
Safeguarding our fragile ecosystems, empowering communities through celebrating local cultures and improving their livelihoods and also tackling waste and pollution are just some things us global travelers can help out. One of the ways to learn more about sustainable travel is by going in person to learn how others are doing this throughout the world.
You could learn how Costa Rica is teaching travelers to lessen their carbon footprint. Or you can explore the top 7 most sustainable cities in the world. Or visit places, like Slovenia, where they have created green routes for the independent traveler. Each of these places and projects are positively impacting the world, one person at a time.
You can make more of a difference than you think! Good Neighbor Insurance international insurance brokerage has a great blog on sustainable travel. Check our 7 best ways to become a sustainable traveler at https://www.gninsurance.com/blog/travel-smarter/7-best-ways-to-become-a-sustainable-traveler

Why You May Need a Travel Medicine Specialist
Recently, an American expatriate living in a remote Asian city contacted our office for advice regarding her pregnancy. She was about eight months pregnant and an ultrasound had detected that her baby was not growing normally. She wanted to know more about her expatriate medical insurance, especially as she was planning an upcoming trip to get a second opinion about her baby.
For situations like these there are three major options to choose from to stay protected. First, always have some form of global medical insurance when traveling which will cover for worse case situations that are brand new. This would include things like sudden illness not related to her pregnancy, or injury while on her trip. Travel insurance for those traveling a few days up to a year is important to have in order to stay protected. You may view a few travel insurance options at https://www.gninsurance.com/travel if you are planning an upcoming trip.
Expatriate insurance, like this soon-to-be mother needed to have while residing outside her country of citizenship, is vital. Her expatriate policy that she had purchased before moving overseas last year covered many of her maternity care expenses. Good Neighbor Insurance has a variety of expat medical insurance options where many provide maternity coverage. If you are planning to move overseas, you may view our expatriate medical insurance options at https://www.gninsurance.com/health.
The second major option a global traveler and expatriate may want to consider is hiring a travel medical specialist. Of course, the third and best option is to first have both global medical insurance and a traveling medical specialist where you can get advice. Luckily, this expectant mother called travel medical specialist Dr. Dale Caroll who was able to answer her questions and give her peace of mind about her situation.

Nomad Life on Water: Sailing, Yachting and Cruising Part 1
Did you know sailing is one of the oldest nomadic lifestyles? Today we are seeing a resurgence of sailing as a nomadic lifestyle.
Living on a boat has become so much easier today. So easy in fact that families with young children are deciding a mobile home on the water is a better way to not only raise a family but to teach their children through global experiences. Nomadic sailing also allows each of us to live a simpler life style. And realizing that human connection, discovering beautiful corners of the world, and learning new cultures is so much more fulfilling.
Yes, it’s not always easy living a nomadic lifestyle. We might miss things like celebrating birthdays and get-togethers with family and friends. But we get to make new friends from around the world and celebrate new and exciting holidays. We also might be missing some of our creature comforts of land base home such as going to one of our favorite pizza restaurants down the road. But then again, as nomadic sailors, we get to try new delicious cuisine from around the world, including the real pizza in small coastal towns throughout Italy.
Sometimes we miss those new movies that come out or watching those TV reality shows. Wait! I don’t miss that. We are living out our own reality show as a nomadic sailor. It is way better to live out our global reality show than watch it on TV. Nomadic sailors realize that living in the now is way better than and not postponing it for a “one day or someday” memories.
Good Neighbor Insurance is researching this type of nomadic lifestyle and will be sharing new blogs relating to sailing modern nomads as well as other types of nomadic lifestyles happening. Check out our Nomad Life on the Water: Sailing, Yachting, and Cruising Part 1 here at https://www.gninsurance.com/blog/travel-smarter/nomad-life-on-water-sailing-yachting-cruising-part-1.
And over the course of these next months, we will be adding more in-depth nomadic lifestyle blogs here at https://www.gninsurance.com/blog. We wish you and yours a very safe and an awe-inspiring a nomadic lifestyle!

Travel Guide – Backpacking through Southern Italy
Backpacking is a fantastic way to explore new destinations, especially for adventure sport enthusiasts and for those on a budget. Here at Good Neighbor Insurance, https://www.gninsurance.com, we’re passionate about bringing you the best information and keeping you safe on all of your travels. Today we’re diving into the backpacking travel trend and discussing one of our favorite destinations: Italy.
Many backpackers adventure through northern Italy and the alps, however those limited trails miss the majestic beauty and rich history of southern Italy. To begin your journey, we recommend landing by plane at the international airport in Rome. From there you can spend several days exploring the Forum & ruins, notable churches & basilicas, and even the Vatican. While near Rome we highly recommend visiting the Appian way- considered one of the first main paved travel routes in the world! The next destination we love on this trek is Naples.
Known for being the birthplace of Pizza, Naples has many “secret” pathways designed for the traveler on foot to explore. After grabbing a slice, it’s time to head down to Pompeii. With some of the best-preserved ruins in the world, Pompeii offers an unparalleled peek into the lifestyles of ancient romans before the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. Sicily, the island off the coast of Italy is the southernmost destination on this adventure, and we recommend staying in the charming city of Palermo. In Sicily you can explore the most active volcano in Europe, and enjoy the relaxed pace of local life with a leisurely bowl of pasta near the sea.
Finally, back on the main land we love the destination of Bari. One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, the architecture will take your breath away. After you’re done wandering the streets, go down to the caves by the coast to see some exciting surprises!
We always recommend protecting all of your backpacking adventures with a comprehensive travel medical plan that includes adventure sports or hiking while you’re overseas. Learn more about protecting your adventure at https://www.gninsurance.com/travel or live chat with us at https://www.gninsurance.com!

Celebrate New Year’s Around the World
What if you could spend New Year’s anywhere in the world? Which country would you choose? For me, it is hard to choose just one country. It is a toss-up between the country of Indonesia and Australia. Today we’re going to explore what is perhaps the most iconic tradition in the world and that is the dropping of a giant ball in New York City’s Times Square which has become an international phenomenon and the world’s symbolic welcome to the New Year.
We also choose Sydney, Australia since many Americans would love to celebrate the New Year down under, especially in the middle of summer! Enjoy the harbor New Year festivities from harbor picnics, to dance parties and an opera performance. These traditional Australian New Year’s events will provide great memories for you and your love one. A favorite way to welcome in the New Year among both tourists and the locals, is a Sydney New Year Harbour Cruise. Cruise packages can include canapes, dinner, beverages, live entertainment and a party atmosphere.
But if you are still wanting to bundle up for cold weather, then head over to Reykjavik, Iceland to celebrate the night away- and we mean ALL night, with two different rounds of fireworks! Another great city to enjoy the night away is Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, one of the most important events of the year there and it is a top location in Southeast Asia to spend New Year’s. You can count on some magnificent fireworks along with lively street fairs and massive parties that take you to the countdowns.
There are so many other places to celebrate the New Year in style such as in Tokyo, Japan and in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. But no matter where you and I travel to celebrate the New Year, it is always good to celebrate with your love one and friends. Check out our Celebrate New Year’s Around the World blog here at https://www.gninsurance.com/blog/travel-smarter/celebrate-new-years-around-the-world.

Hiking Around the World – Part 1 of 2
Do you love to hike? Are you looking for some interesting and unique trails to explore around the world? Join us as we discover some of the best hikes globally! There are numerous good choices, so we begin this series with three special hikes fit for hikers of all skill level. No matter what, you’ll find something you love on these trails!
Norway is a great choice to see many natural wonders that include spectacular fjord scenery, with waterfalls, and some of the most beautiful untouched land. Trolltunga Trail is one of those trails. Trolltunga Trail translates into the Troll’s Tongue and is one of Norway’s most famous and breathtaking sights to explore the beauty of the country.
The next trail we want to wander is in Nepal called Ghorepani Poon Hill. This is a top choice for many visitors that do not have extensive hiking experience and would like to get a taste of hiking in the region and enjoy the beauty of snow-capped mountains. It is a quick 30-minute flight from Kathmandu to reach Pokhara from Pokhara, it’s just 1 ½ hours to Nayapul, where you will start the hike that takes you through the Himalayan mountains!
Another amazing trail that we love to try is in the Tanjung Putting National Park located in Kalimantan, Indonesia. Kalimantan is famous for its orangutans and rainforests. It has one of the most breathtaking equatorial rainforests on the planet. There are all kinds of adventures into the deep and vast jungles where you will find all kinds of captivating wildlife.
Remember, no matter where you hike, it’s always best to be protected with a travel medical insurance policy that will cover you in the event you get injured or ill. Check out some travel medical plans available now on our website linked in the description below!
Keep an eye out for our Part 2 of Hiking around the World. But for this blog, please check out our Hiking Around the World – Part 1 of 2 blog at https://www.gninsurance.com/blog/travel-smarter/hiking-around-the-world.
Hiking Around the World – Part 2 of 2
Continuing our series on experiencing some great hiking trails and sights to see around the world, we take a look at three more choices to explore. Are you adventurous enough to check out these amazing hikes around the world?
If you missed the first part of this series, we recommend watching that video as well, linked in the description below and our blog article here at https://www.gninsurance.com/blog/travel-smarter/hiking-around-the-world! We’ve put together the best international trails that give you a unique perspective of the beauty and culture of some special destinations. The following three trails are definitely worth checking out!
Skeleton Gorge Trail in South Africa is our first stop. It is one of the most popular ways to hike up the east side of Table Mountain. How about heading close towards the South Pole? Our second adventurous trail takes us to Laguna de los Tres day hike in Argentina. Laguna de Los Tres is in the Los Glaciares National Park and is 15 ½ miles long. You’ll see glaciers and hidden lakes through the entire hike while surrounded with incredible views!
Lastly, going all the way towards the North Pole, you will love to enjoy the breathtaking panorama while hiking up the Mt. Blahnukur Loop in Iceland. Much of the trail is fairly flat and not difficult, but the trek up the mountain can be fairly steep and challenging at times. Mt. Blahnukur is known as the Blue Peak with its blueish-gray color that makes it different from the yellow, brown and orange mountains of Landmannalaugar.
Hiking poles and some good shoes are helpful for this 4-mile hike. Along with the best equipment, it’s important to also protect yourself with a travel medical plan that will cover you if you get injured or ill along the way. There are plans specifically designed for hiking and adventure sports, and you can even get your gear covered! And if you made it this far we’d love for you to read our full blog about Hiking Around the World – Part 2 of 2 here at https://www.gninsurance.com/blog/travel-smarter/hiking-around-the-world-part-2 where you’ll find in depth information on all of the hikes we mentioned.

Your Beginners Guide to Yachting
Welcome to your beginner’s guide to yachting! Today we’re diving into the exciting world of yachting- which simply means the lifestyle and vacation style of living or working on a yacht style boat.
What is a yacht? Historically yachts were simply boats that were not designed to work in a trade. They started appearing as fast race boats in Amsterdam’s boat races in the 17th century, and have since grown to become synonymous with luxurious liveaboard boats.
Who goes yachting? You might think being on a yacht is only for the rich and famous- but that’s not true! Yachting can be very affordable, especially for longer charters on smaller boats. The simple answer? Everyone can go yachting!
What kind of yachts exist? There are three basic types of yachts: a sailing yacht which relies on sails to move around the water, a motor yacht which relies exclusively on its motor, and a gulet yacht which has both sails and a motor.
What amenities are on yachts? Many yachts will include lifestyle amenities like wifi, cable TV, pools and jacuzzis, and gathering areas to enjoy all the views the yacht will have to offer on charter. Most also include water sports equipment for snorkeling or scuba diving.
How much does it cost to book a private yacht? According to worldwideboat.com, “the average weekly cost of a 100-foot sailing yacht is between $50,000-100,000.” These vessels can comfortably house about 12 people as well as a full crew.
Who crews a yacht? Yacht crews can have anywhere from 3 people to over 100 people on crew depending on the size of the ship. Typically, they’re broken down into four departments: Deck, who are responsible for the day-to-day sailing, Engineers who are responsible for all the mechanical or electrical parts of the ship, Interior who are responsible for cleaning and service, and Galley who are all about the food.
May I work on a yacht? Typically, only a few certification courses are required before you can begin working on a yacht! You have to be available to work and live on board for the full season.
While yachting is considered a safe activity and lifestyle, we would never recommend working aboard a yacht, or even vacationing without the proper travel or nomad insurance coverage. Learn more about travel and nomad insurance at gninsurance.com/travel, so you can stay protected on the high seas.
Want to know more about yachting? Please head over to our blog here at https://www.gninsurance.com/blog/how-to/beginners-guide-to-yachting. We hope you enjoyed this beginner’s guide to yachting.

Ireland Road Trip
Located on the western edge of Europe, Ireland is an island that consists of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Known as the Emerald Isle, Ireland is a fascinating country with deep roots of Viking, Celtic and Anglo-Norman cultures. You will see more shades of green landscape than you could ever imagine.
Our first stop is Dublin, Ireland’s capital and largest city. Dublin is known for stunning cathedrals, medieval castles, historical museums and of course classic pubs with live music along with many hidden attractions. It is also known for its folklore, fine literature, traditions, customary music and dance and there is always a supply of pints of Guinness. Dublin Castle is one of the most important buildings in Irish history. It was the seat of power for British rule for over 700 years and has been witness to some of the most pivotal events in Ireland’s history.
At Christ Church Cathedral you can get a taste of what life was like back in 1030 as you climb the spiraling staircase of the Cathedral. With its stunning architecture, 12th-century crypt, and the sound of the medieval bells, it is truly a highlight of Dublin. We also recommend visiting Trinity College, founded by Queen Elizabeth in 1592 and Ireland’s oldest university. It was used by J.K. Rowling as inspiration for Hogwarts in Harry Potter. For a change of pace after your tour, take a leisurely walk along the eclectic Grafton Street.
After spending time in Dublin, we are off on a short two-hour drive to Kilkenny. A special landmark in Kilkenny is The Medieval Mile It is a stretch of road deep in history with a discovery trail that runs through the center of town that includes many historic buildings, ancient churches and the amazing castle.
Next on our adventure is the Waterford city, which lies along Ireland’s southeast coast and was once home to the largest Viking settlement outside of Scandinavia. The city of Cork should be on the list for sure when traveling through Ireland. Cork is right on the coast with many striking beaches- and has the second largest harbor in the world.
One of Ireland’s greatest treasures and world landmark Blarney Castle is this partial ruin of a Medieval castle built almost 600 years ago by Cormac MacCarthy. A big draw for the castle is the Blarney Stone, the Stone of Eloquence, at the top of the tower. Legend has it that kissing the stone means that you will never again be lost for words and always have the gift of gab.
Finally, Skellig Michael Island, located off the coast of Kerry is a top attraction. It is the site where the early Christian monks built their monastery. It is a well-preserved Christian settlement and was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1996. It has developed additional fame as a spot for shooting two Star Wars movies.
This concludes our tour of Ireland! We hope you feel inspired to plan your visit! As always, before you whisk off on your next adventure, we recommend protecting yourself and your trip with the best travel insurance. Please click on our website or give us a call to learn more about what plans are right for your next trip!

Pies Around the World
In this video, we’ll look at 14 kinds of pies found in 14 different countries around the world. This is not a comprehensive list but will give you a good idea on the variety of pies that exists!
Pumpkin Pie from the United States
- Pumpkin pie is one of the most well-known because of it being associated with Thanksgiving, which is a holiday virtually everyone in the U.S. celebrates.
- Pumpkin pie is one of the most unique pies because most people around the world would never think to make pumpkin sweet.
Meat Pie from Australia and New Zealand
- Unlike the pumpkin pie, which is a sweet pie served in a specific part of the year, the meat pie is a savory pie that is served year-round.
- Australian meat pies are often eaten as a snack food or at lunch time and can be found almost anywhere.
Saskatoon Berry Pie from Canada
- The next pie is a sweet pie made from a berry called saskatoon.
- The season for saskatoon berries is incredibly short, typically being harvested in mid to late July.
Sfiha from Lebanon
- Sfiha (also called Lahmajun) is a Lebanese dish that is similar to a pizza or a pie.
- Sfihas consist of dough and a meaty topping. The dough is similar to pizza dough. The topping can be made with either ground beef or ground lamb.
Shepherd’s Pie from the United Kingdom
- Shepherd’s pie was probably first made in the late 1700s as a way to get rid of leftovers.
- A typical shepherd’s pie is made with ground lamb, ground vegetables, gravy, spices, and a thick layer of mashed potatoes. The dish is not difficult to make, but it sure tastes delicious. It’s considered a comfort food by many.
Buko Pie from the Philippines
- Buko pie is a traditional Filipino pie with a creamy coconut filling and a flaky pastry crust. It may remind you of a coconut cream pie.
Spanakopita from Greece
- This famous triangular-shaped pie is usually made with layers of phyllo dough brushed with butter or olive oil and filled with spinach, feta cheese, herbs, and scallions.
- Spanakopita is often eaten as a snack or appetizer and can be found in delis, bakeries, and restaurants. It’s usually served with tzatziki sauce for dipping.
Quiche Lorraine from France
- The first pies were open-faced and made with cream, egg, and bacon.
- Now, most have a puff pastry crust and other ingredients in the filling like vegetables, beef, ham, cheese, or even salmon.
Pastel de Choclo from Chile
- Pastel de Choclo is also called Chilean Shepherd’s Pie.
- To better understand this dish, it helps to know that Chile has hosted many immigrants from England, Spain, and Germany over the last 200 years.
- Pastel de Choclo is a layered casserole made up of a top layer of sweet corn polenta (Choclo means corn) over a layer of ground beef, onions, olives, raisins, and hard-boiled eggs. So, it really is a mix of cultures.
Zwetschgenkuchen from Germany
- In German, zwetschgen means “plum” and kuchen means “cake,” so zwetschgenkuchen is a plum cake.
- Zwetschgenkuchen is often made in the late summer or fall when the Italian plums are in season.
Paifala from American Samoa
- Paifala is a sweet pie from a small island in the Pacific called American Samoa (not far from Fiji). It’s also known as a half-moon pie because of its shape.
- Paifala uses two fruits found on the island, pineapple and coconut, and a few other simple ingredients. It’s a dense pie with a thick crust and heavy filling, but it’s very tasty. You’ve probably had something similar to it before.
Chicken Pastilla from Morocco
- Chicken Pastilla, or Bastilla, is a traditional Moroccan chicken pie that is both savory and a little sweet.
- Chicken pastilla is a fairly challenging and time-consuming dish to make. One of the difficult parts is the thin dough called warqa.
Bobotie Pie from South Africa
- Bobotie is similar to shepherd’s pie but without the potato topping. It has a custardy egg topping instead.
Torta Pasqualina from Italy
- The final pie on our list is the savory torta pasqualina from Liguria in Italy.
- The main components are a delicious crust along with an egg, ricotta, and spinach filling. The crust was originally made with 33 very thin layers, one for each year of Jesus’ life.

Boba Tea around the World
Have you seen drinks that have colorful tapioca balls in the bottom? They’re called Boba or Bubble Tea.
The origins of Boba Tea are debated. However, many feel Boba tea originated from Taiwan. This type of tea is usually served blended with ice and starts with a tea base combined with either milk or fruit flavoring and chewy tapioca pearls. But this writer also has seen Boba tea served without ice served and mixed in a gazillion different ways. Boba tea is also served with a wide straw designed to make it easier to eat the sweet pearls at the bottom
Specialty boba shops offer drinks in hundreds of flavor combinations including fruity combinations and traditional dessert flavors. Bubble tea is often found served alongside other Asian cuisine options like minced pork with rice, or poke bowls. Boba has become so common it can often be found in shopping malls or small specialty shops in any metropolitan area. But to get the best boba you’d have to go directly to Taiwan (and don’t forget your travel insurance when you do!)

Top 10 ways to save money when traveling globally
You have been thinking of taking an international vacation with your family for a long time and want to make sure you get the most value for your money. Planning for a family trip can be a huge undertaking and a little overwhelming for many people. There are so many things to consider and options. It’s important to clearly define what you want to do, where you are going to stay and how you’re going to get around while traveling.
Global Airfares are generally one of the most expensive parts of your trip and can put a big dent in any international travel budget. Most of the airlines have all kinds of amazing deals and special promotions if you know where to look. If you have the flexibility, we recommend selecting your location and dates based on the best available deals. Many times, even changing your travel dates by just a few days can produce big changes in international flight prices.
Depending how large your family is, multiple hotel room charges can quickly add up and be a huge expense for you. Fortunately, you have some other options that have come on the scene in the last few years to cut your costs for lodging overseas. The rise in online home-rental services has been a huge benefit to families. A nice advantage of staying at an Airbnb or even a hostel is the use of a kitchen which can save you a huge amount of money, especially with several family members. You can stop at a local supermarket or farmers’ market to pick up some essentials. You will be surprised at how much you can save by preparing some of your own meals and it only takes a few minutes to pack a lunch for the day.
A great way to get the scoop on what is going on and where to go is to speak to the local residents. Instead of just relying on your smartphone, take some time and strike up a conversation with some of these residents. They will have some good ideas of what is fun to do, tourists traps to avoid and some good places to eat. You will probably not want to have to cook every meal even if you have a kitchen. Part of the enjoyment of the trip is experiencing some of the local cuisines. One way to pay less than you would at the restaurants most travelers choose is by getting away from the tourist zone and finding some of the hidden spots that the locals can recommend to you. Acting less like a tourist and more like a local can pay off for you.
Traveling globally to a major tourist destination in the off-season can be a great way to make your family vacation affordable. While the weather may be less than ideal, you won’t be bumping into loads of tourists and will also get some reduced prices because of the time of year. It will sure reduce your time of standing in line for various activities. For some free things to do, think of parks, historic sites and other points of interest. To start with, simply google ‘free attractions’ of the city for some good ideas.
Try to avoid exchanging money at the international airport. It may be convenient, but it comes at a price. Your best bet is to exchange for foreign currency at your local bank or credit union before leaving on your international trip. Withdrawing money overseas using a debit card can sometimes get you a better exchange rate than you would get from a bank or credit union. Travel reward cards can help reduce the cost of your trip by letting you earn free points that can be redeemed for airfares, hotels and cash. There are endless offers out there from which to choose the best card.
You have saved money and planned thoroughly to have a great experience on your overseas trip, so you don’t want any interruptions or setbacks along the way. It’s important to get there and return safely and you know that accidents happen and medical care can be extremely expensive. Travel insurance can provide a vital safeguard and sense of security for your trip. Don’t forget to plan for the unexpected. If you happen to get sick or injured, it could be the most expensive part of your international trip.
You know you need coverage, but it’s challenging to know where to start. That’s why it is important to have an experienced friend to guide you to a travel plan that best meets your needs. Your friends at Good Neighbor Insurance https://www.gninsurance.com have been assisting travelers for over 24 years to find the best plan for their specific needs. We help to make sure you and your loved ones have protection while traveling overseas. We want your trip to be successful and fulfilling. There are so many variables involved in choosing the right plan, so we make sure you get the best coverage for your needs. It’s hard to put a value on peace of mind when you are traveling. It can make all the difference.
We hope you will benefit from some of these ideas to get the most for your money on that next global family vacation. With some smart planning strategies and a focus towards savings, you can have the trip of a lifetime. Have a wonderful vacation!

Curry Around the World
Let’s explore curry around the world! Curry is a dish with a sauce and seasoned with spices. It typically contains spiced meat and a vegetable served over rice, bread or cornmeal. Each curry has a unique flavor and taste depending on which sweet and savory spices are used and how they are used.
Curry is a very aromatic dish and has a strong smell while being cooked. You can recognize the unique scent even hours after it has been cooked. Some people also think of curry as any dish that is flavored with curry powder which is a mixture usually including turmeric, cumin seed, chilies, fenugreek and coriander seed.
We will start with India, the place most commonly accepted for the native home of curry. While most of the time not using the word curry to describe their dishes, Indians have traditionally called their dishes by specific names that include, korma vindaloo, molee, rogan josh and doh pizza, to name a few.
Curry has long ranked as one of the most popular foods in the UK. A national favorite dish of the British, is Chicken Tikka Masala. It is said that the dish was invented more than 500 years ago in the Punjab region of India.
Malaysia’s curry history is said to go way back to the 15th century when the country served as an important passageway for maritime trade. A very popular dish is Curry Laksa (or Curry Mee). It is a coconut based curried noodle soup with shrimp, shredded chicken, fried tofu and bean sprouts. It’s a combination of Southeast Asian curries and Chinese noodles.
The big curry influence in Thailand came with a big wave of Indian immigrants that arrived in the 19th century. A good example of a tasty Thai curry is Massaman. It is thick, but milder than many Thai curry dishes and has a tangy and sweet taste.
Indonesia has a long history involving trade and its cuisine has middle eastern and Indian influences, as well as many others. If you want to try an extravagantly rich dish, Beef Rendang is a good choice. It is easy to prepare, but takes time and patience to slow cook it. Indonesian Gulais originated in Sumatra, likely from Indian culinary influence. It is a full flavored, rich and spicy sauce.
South Africans have also created their own version of the dish. As in many countries, there are as many curries as there are cultural groups. Bunny chow is a very unique and popular South African street food and a highly spiced curry for the spice lover.
Jamaican curry differs from the Indian variety by the use of curry powder, which is not used in India. These pre-made curry powder spice blends include mixes of turmeric, cumin, garlic, cardamom, paprika and fenugreek. In Jamaica, one of the island’s favorite dishes is Curry Goat, where goat meat is slowly simmered with coconut milk, ginger, thyme, aromatic blend garlic, onions, hot pepper, tomatoes and much turmeric for a sunny yellow hue.
In the Caribbean country of Trinidad & Tobago, the curries can definitely be categorized as much hotter than in other parts of the world, especially Trini curries. Some of the recipes substitute cayenne peppers for the much hotter Scotch Bonnet chilies, as an example.
Curry even found a way to sneak into Japan! Some of the more common forms are Karee Raisu (curry rice), Karee Udon (curried wheat noodles) and Karee Pan (curry stuffed inside a roll).
We hope you have been given a taste of the diversity of curries around the globe and are inspired to try some of these various dishes. Check out our blog article on “Curry Around the World” at https://www.gninsurance.com/blog.

After wandering the grounds, Asheville offers a wide variety of microbreweries as well as an active arts district to get the creative juices flowing.
After North America, it’s time to hop the Atlantic Ocean and find our next destination in Africa: Zanzibar. But first, if you like to travel give this video a thumbs up! While this destination may carry a mixed history, we believe it’s a diamond in the rough, especially for those looking for adventure. With buildings dating back to the 16th century, the walled city inside Cartagena is one of the most beautiful historic districts in South America. You’ll never be bored at night in Cartagena, the night life dancing options and late-night cafes are sure to bring some added spice and fun to your trip.

What if there was a way to stay in luxurious places without breaking the bank? The good news is, there is! If you’ve always wanted to stay in a 5-star hotel but never had the opportunity, here’s your chance!
Indonesia is home to hundreds of nice hotels, villas, and resorts. Some are incredibly expensive, but others are very affordable. If you do your research, you will find that there are several luxurious hotels that won’t cost you hundreds of dollars each night. In this article, we’ll share with you what we think are 10 of the best 5-star hotels in all of Indonesia that start under $100 per night.
A Little About Indonesia
- When you think of vacationing to Indonesia, Bali is usually the first place that comes to mind. But there are several other beautiful places to see within the country. Indonesia consists of approximately 6,000 inhabited islands, 700 languages, and many unique foods.
- Out of the 10 5-star hotels listed below, five are located in Bali while the other five are found in other parts of Indonesia. We’ll explain briefly about each place below.
One note about the prices is that they will be higher during peak travel season, which is typically March through October and then around Christmas. A good way to save money while traveling is to travel in the offseason as much as possible.
Let’s start with the hotels in Bali first.
Best 5-Star Hotels in Bali, Indonesia
- Bali is not a large island (smaller than the state of Connecticut) but has become the tourist capital for Indonesia. On this island alone, there are hundreds of nice hotels and resorts. Most of them are in the southern part of the island, towards Denpasar. But there are also several in the Ubud region, which is central Bali.
There are many reasons to like the Discovery Kartika Plaza hotel. First, it’s in a great location. It’s only two kilometers from the airport and one of the most popular beaches in Bali: Kuta Beach.
- This nice hotel is located between Denpasar and Kuta, which provides easy access to most of the southern part of the island. It’s also near many shops and tourist attractions, so you can be sure to get some souvenirs before returning home.
- The Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel offers three different types of rooms, including rooms with a view of the ocean. They also offer several types of suites and a two-bedroom beachfront villa. The rooms are very nice, including the bathrooms…to be continued in are 3 Part Series.
Don’t Forget to Stay Protected
- Even though you may be staying in comfort and luxury, that doesn’t mean you are immune from something bad happening. Unfortunately, accidents can happen anywhere. There are many things out of our control.
- Good Neighbor Insurance recommends you purchase travel insurance every time you travel. You can get 5-star protection for very little money. Whether you get in an accident or eat something you shouldn’t, our plans will protect you.

Best 5-Star Hotels in Bali, Indonesia – continuing on our 2nd Part of our 3 Part Series

- The Bali Dynasty Resort is just one minute away from the Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel. As mentioned above, this is a very convenient location in terms of proximity to the airport, several beaches, shops, and nightlife.
- This hotel is packed with amenities; enough to keep you occupied for several days. There are six restaurants, five bars, and four swimming pools. Other amenities include a luxury spa, kid’s playground, beach corner, kid’s club, gym, and more!
- This is a very family-friendly resort. One of the pools is a kids-only pool with a giant waterslide and a water fun zone. There is a playground and various activities for kids scheduled throughout the day, including yoga, art, bingo, and more. This resort also has large rooms to accommodate families, and kids under 12 can eat free in one of the restaurants.
- The next resort takes us a little further north on Bali. North of Denpasar and on the south side of Ubud is a resort called the SereS Springs Resort and Spa. This resort is found in a slightly more remote area of the island.
- If you like luxury but also want more peace and quiet, this is a great choice. You will get a more authentic Indonesian experience. However, you’re still not far from waterfalls, temples, a monkey forest, and more unique places to see.
- Just one kilometer to the south is another amazing lodging experience called Tanadewa. This means you will still have a quiet, relaxing experience while being close to the many great tourist destinations mentioned above.
- Head north a few kilometers, and you will find the last amazing 5-star hotel we recommend in Bali. The Arkamara Resort is still in the Ubud area, not far from the monkey forest and Ubud Palace.
- Similar to the two resorts above, this feels tucked away in the jungle even though you aren’t far from the rest of the city. You feel secluded, which allows you to rejuvenate and get away.

How to Stretch Your Money Living in Portugal: A Guide for Budget-Conscious Expats
Portugal has become a hot spot for expats, and it’s easy to see why. Pristine beaches, historic cities, a mild climate, welcoming communities, and a laid-back culture make this country a wonderful place for those seeking an adventure abroad.
The Cost of Living in Portugal
- For those considering living in Portugal, the good news is that the country is known for its affordability. When compared to the United States, Portugal’s cost of living is, on average, 36.7% lower. And on a global scale, Portugal is cheaper than 49% of countries in the world.
Here are some Tips for Saving Money as an Expat in Portugal
Research different areas – Before you get your heart set on one location in Portugal, spend some time comparing the cost of living in each region. The interior of the country tends to be the most affordable, while big cities, such as Lisbon and Porto, tend to be more expensive.
Shop at local markets – Rather than heading to the supermarket for all your produce and goods, take the time to explore the local markets. Street vendors, farmers’ markets, and organic food markets can all help you save money on your monthly bills.
Embrace the local cuisine –
- Eating out at lunchtime may seem counterintuitive for sure. But if you are really starving you may want to do this to get your stomach all happy. In Portugal, it’s common for restaurants to offer a “prato do dia” (dish of the day) at lunchtime, which is usually a complete meal that includes a main dish, sides, bread, and sometimes dessert or coffee. These meals are often very affordable, ranging from 5 to 10 euros, and are a great way to enjoy a hearty and delicious lunch without breaking the bank.
- Take advantage of happy hour and “petiscos”: Many bars and restaurants in Portugal offer “happy hour” specials on drinks and “petiscos”, which are small plates of food that are perfect for sharing. This is a great way to enjoy a night out with friends while also saving money on food and drinks.
Use public transit –
- Owning a vehicle can be costly in Portugal. To save money, consider using public transit instead. Portugal has an expansive and efficient public transit system that makes it easy to get around the country without your own vehicle. The rail network links almost all major cities and towns, and buses make up any gaps. In large cities, you’ll find metro systems, subways, tram networks, and local bus services. Fares are reasonable, making this a budget-friendly option for expats.
- Outside of the major cities, trains and buses are the most common modes of transportation. Portugal’s national railway company, Comboios de Portugal (CP), operates trains that connect most major cities and towns. Buses are operated by a variety of companies and are often the only option for getting to smaller towns and villages.

Don’t Forget to Travel Safely! When planning for international living or travel to Portugal and beyond, one crucial step that often gets overlooked is purchasing expatriate or travel insurance. As an expat, you can receive health insurance from the state in certain cases. However, the Servico Nacional de Saude (SNS) only provides essential medical services for free, and other services may require a fee. Research your options carefully before making your move to Portugal, and consider investing in an international health insurance plan that will provide you with proper medical care without a major expense.
No one wants to anticipate accidents or mishaps, but the truth is that they happen more frequently than we realize. At Good Neighbor Insurance Global Brokerage, we’ve been serving expatriates and travelers like you for over 26 years and have heard too many heartbreaking stories that could have been avoided with the right protection.

Retirement in Southeast Asia is a great option for those seeking affordability and diverse culture. Each location has its own unique features and attractions. Consider your personal preferences when deciding on a retirement destination.
Ensuring the security of your retirement is crucial, and it’s important to factor in all aspects before making a decision. It’s worth noting that your health insurance (for those from the U.S.) won’t provide coverage while you’re living overseas, and healthcare expenses can add up quickly. While healthcare costs in these cities are not as high as in the United States, an unforeseen accident or illness can still be financially devastating.
We understand that you wouldn’t want your hard-earned savings to go down the drain, which is why we recommend purchasing expatriate insurance before making the move. This will provide you with peace of mind and enable you to enjoy your retirement without any worries.
At Good Neighbor Insurance, we offer several excellent expat medical insurance plans that cater to your specific needs. Please feel free to get in touch with us, and we’ll help you choose the best plan that fits your requirements.
