Insurance Coverage for Furlough or Sabbatical

How long do you need insurance coverage for? A couple weeks, or months or a year or more?

Will you be returning home? Is home the USA or another nation?

Your current health coverage? Some individual international health insurance policies of a year or more will include a “home stay” option of up to a few months per year. Sometimes this is based on a calendar year meaning October, November, and December could be covered under your current year’s policy and January, February, and March under next year’s coverage. So it is always good to ask or call us when considering your options. Some group health insurance also includes home stay coverage.

Does your current health insurance cover furloughs?

If you are on a national healthcare policy or your current health plan does not include returns or extended stays in the USA or your home country of citizenship, you will need a short-term health plan to have furlough insurance or insurance for your sabbatical.

Expatriate residents

It is much easier if you are considered a resident (expat) of the nation you currently live in. A resident usually means you can receive mail overseas or may have a local driver’s license. Affordable furlough plans available

If you need furlough insurance of up to a year in the USA, we can help. You might want to inquire about short-term health insurance options such as gap insurance or a bridge plan even if you are planning to return abroad at some point in the future.  These plans are significantly less cost than U.S domestic ACA health insurance. Sometimes, you plan to be back home for a few weeks and it grows into months as you raise support or finish a degree program, or maybe a parent is in poor health. Some of our plans are short-term, but renewable if you realize that you are unexpectedly going to be at home longer than you expected.
