Here are some questions and tips that will help you when shopping for insurance for sabbatical or furlough:

Will you be going overseas or returning “home” for your furlough or sabbatical?

Different types of insurance may be required to meet your needs depending on whether you are traveling to a third country or returning “home” to your country of citizenship on your furlough or sabbatical. Also, if you have international health insurance as an expatriate living abroad or are on a nationalized health plan. If you already have an international health plan, it may include foreign travel worldwide and you may not need a separate policy. However, some international policies exclude the USA and Canada in order to lower rates and save you the most money. If that is the case and you intend to return to the USA or Canada, you will want to choose a policy from the options above for the time you will be there.

Make sure you make it clear if you are a U.S. citizen living abroad and traveling to a third nation. This will help in selecting and applying for a plan as some carriers ask you to always indicate you are an American traveling abroad, even if your home address is somewhere else.

Travel to the U.S.

If you are a non-U.S. citizen traveling to the USA for furlough or sabbatical or an extended time to raise support or study, you have a number of options. It is always best to speak with us to find the best fit and best plan for your specific needs.

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling “home” to the USA for 3 weeks or 3 months or a year and needing insurance for sabbatical or furlough, things are a little different. Options include travel plans to the USA with a daily rate and plans that let you renew if you decide to extend your stay. Options also include plans for up to one year for those who may not be returning or staying longer than one year in the USA, or maybe transitioning back to the U.S.

All these options have different plans that work best for each individual, couple or family.


Covered under your International Health Insurance?

Some international health insurance policies of a year or more will include a “home-stay” or “home-country coverage” benefit of up to a few months per year. Group health insurance may even let you be on the policy longer, while in the U.S.

Up to a year?

For those staying up to a year or more, transitioning back to the U.S. or waiting for open enrollment on an ACA health plan, we have bridge plans and gap plans that allow you to renew for coverage up to one year.
